Canadian Pacific Railway then and now – Cochrane Alberta
For this railway themed “then and now” post we find ourselves in Cochrane Alberta, along side the CPR’s east/west mainline. The first image is from thirty years ago and shows an eastbound freight at the edge of town. We’ll return to that location to see what it all looks like today and hopefully we’ll also capture a train like in the original…

Location: Cochrane, AB.
My uncle Barry Monroe worked for CP Rail out of Calgary. I am sure he past this spot many times.
Thanks for sharing!
Nice shot Chris!
I think Cochrane is on pace to be the next Airdrie, but they will always have a better view;)
You are right about the views, but the small town charm is gone.
Another good job on the Cochrane location. I have not been back in that area since I took the photo but I can imagine the housing development that has taken place.

Yes, just off to the left is a huge sea of houses. Cochrane is not the nice little village it once was.
Great job lining this one up!
It’s so much fun when we get almost spot on like this.
Be sure to get out to Glenbow Ranch sometime soon. It is a newly opened provincial park just south of highway 1A a few kilometers from Cochrane. Many trails to explore, and some interesting views of the CPR track including the original telegraph poles and wires.
Thanks for the recommendation – we’ve been to Glenbow Ranch a few times now.
