Boxcar

Here we are, travelling down some back road we’ve never been before (and you thought we’ve seen every one), Crowsnest Pass area of Alberta, and we see this, an ancient boxcar in retirement. Once belonging to Canadian Pacific Railway it’s at the edge of a field sitting in a corral of sorts, in a spectacular setting, it’s purpose some sort of shelter or shed. Gotta stop for this one. We always pad the schedule, just in case we find something worthy of our attention like this.

When worn out or no longer needed, old boxcars, or railway cars of any type, usually get cut up for scrap, but sometimes they find their way into the hands of the general public or whomever. Flat cars make good bridges, and boxcars, storage buildings and the like. We seem them used like this often enough.

This particular car still carries its road number and with that we can find out a bit about it. According to Nakina.net, the place for Canadian railway car roster information, this one, #257013, was built in 1950 and likely retired by the 1990s (railways get good use of their cars). It was built by the Eastern Car Company, Trenton Nova Scotia, the firm, operating under various names and owners made rail cars from 1913-2007. They also manufactured lots of other stuff too, all heavy steel things of course.

Short Subjects: reports that for any number of reasons are brief in nature. They might be updates to older articles, previews of posts planned or not yet published, brief snippets of things that don’t fit in anywhere else or subjects that are so obscure that information on them can’t be found. Or sometimes we just ramble on about Lord knows what.

If you need any more information on what we talked about here, by all means contact us!

Date of adventure: June, 2017.
Location: Crowsnest Pass area, AB.

Perfect guest house, but it will be hot as hell in the summer time. Would be perfect for winter, but adding a stove for heat and ventilation for the smoke.
