Few Words: The Rothney Cabin

Sometimes there’s little to say and we hate it! We love to share info dug up on whatever subject we’re covering, but for the Rothney Cabin seen here, it pains us to say we can’t. We don’t know anything about it so far and for someone that lives to babble on and on, it’s pure hell! In spite of our best research efforts, we’ve not been able to trace the history of this building, which fortunately doesn’t happen often. We always find something it seems.

We know all about the land going back well over a century, since the 1970s used by the Rothney Astrophysical Observatory, but not this structure. It may seem like some insignificant ranch outbuilding but instincts suggest it may have once been an early home. It’s clearly quite old and as you can see, not in great shape.

In spite of chatting with former land owners, neighbours, and every historic group in the area that would answer our call, our score is zero. Every history book we could find was consulted. Ditto for land records and maps, but nothing offered insight. How strange, given we’re not all that far from Calgary and most things in the area well documented.

We’ll keep looking, but in the meantime, enjoy the photos. If you know something, please speak up.

We visited the Rothney Cabin twice, coincidentally on both solstices of the year. What timing.
