Two Buildings in Inglewood

Two Buildings in Inglewood: one photographed solely because of its a gaudy pink colour (doing Barbie proud) and the second recalled from childhood memories. These were captured while walking about one of Calgary’s older neighbourhoods and the former’s a church and the other a home, but in the past also a corner store. This is the lesser known and quieter section of Inglewood, sort of secreted away down there by the railyards.

The church is Calgary Christian Assembly but in the past was Temple Of Praise Outreach and earlier still the Church of Peace. By Inglewood standards the structure is relativity new and dates from the mid-1950s. Aerial photos from before show an empty field here.

The second building is just down the street and being from the early 1910s more age-typical for the neighbourhood. It would appear the corner store part (okay technically it’s a middle-of-the-block store) did not come to be until just after World War Two. It functioned as Chinook Grocery, a mom and pop, who presumably lived in the back, and was a snack stop on the many train watching expeditions this author did back in the late ’70s. A busy marshalling yard is only a couple blocks away and while it was a long bus ride to get here, the action was good. It’s no different today.

It still looks the part of the archetypal corner store, but it actually closed about thirty years ago. These were everywhere as a kid, but have died off in recent times and are missed.

From the same card dump…1959 Calgary Stampede Dream Home, Jessie’s – Royal Cafe – Golden Crown and Foran Grade.

Short Subjects: Reports that are brief in nature. Think silly little snippets, vignettes and things of that sort. You’ll be in and out in no time.
