Reynolds Raiders Big Valley Alberta
Twice over the summer of 2023, we had the privilege of hanging with the Reynolds Raiders of Big Valley Alberta. For fun. We’re in town shooting an early episode of the Beer Parlour Project with view camera photographer Rob Pohl at the Big Valley Inn and boy, were we green and have learned a lot since. We have to pay them a revisit for a proper do-over.
Anyway, the Raiders are the bandits that rob the Alberta Prairie Railways Excursions trains out Stettler. It’s done for charity and it always happens at their less than hidden, outlaw saloon there along the tracks. You can’t miss it and they even has a sign in case it’s not obvious enough. They said come over and join us for some fun, so who are we to say no?

Be like Johanna…
As witnesses to the goings-on, it’s clear they enjoy playing the part of desperados. They’ve robbed the train countless times and do so every year (spring into fall, generally several runs a week), yet seemed thoroughly enthusiastic. They’re dedicated, do something good and in a way get to be kids again. That’s not bad. And the folks on the train get a little show and a memorable experience to take back home.
Us, we’re just flies on the wall. Let’s just watch and soak it all up – nothing serious. Rather than ramble on about the experience and bore you to death, as we often do, just enjoy the photos with us. It’s some casual fun and it’s like you’re there.
It was amazing time and we owe them a big thanks. Now scroll down and join us for a little fun…
Also shot on the July visit: 27 Years Apart with Alberta Prairie Ry #41. We’ve rode the tour train before too, a few years back: Alberta Prairie Railway Tours Ride Along.

June…

The Reynolds Raiders rob the Stetter to Big Valley tour trains.

They play the part of desperados, but do it for charity.

They have a grand time & keep in character.

Shooting practice, with blanks of course.

Disputes are settled old west style.

The noise was deafening.

Bandit in training.

An impromptu concert.

The robberies take place here, just outside Big Valley.

Maverick is so easy to photograph.

They played on well into the night at the not so hidden outlaw saloon.
July…

The train arrives and they spring into action.

Local law enforcement seems powerless to stop them.

They rob every single train, but never seem to get caught.

Having a fun childhood.

Hands up…

The whole gang.

Did you hear the one about the…

Outlaws with a heart of gold.

Posing for Rob Pohl’s old time view camera.

The lone rider.
