Coleman Collieries Machine Shop 1913

We’re looking at one of the last buildings connected to the Coleman Collieries coal processing plant in the Crowsnest Pass of Alberta. It was a giant complex built over a broad span of time starting in the early 1900s. When closed down in the 1980s it was the last coal operation in area and with that, a chapter ended.

The plant remained mostly intact into the 2000s, but the owners of property razed most of the structures in recent times. This is the machine shop, in support of the coal operation and they repaired mine equipment here. There’s a big RV Park on the former plant lands and it’s their place now.

The date 1913 is cast into a wall of this concrete building. It’s a solid structure and appears in reasonable shape.

Coal processed in the Coleman Collieries plant came from a number of underground and surface mines in the Pass. There used to be dozens and dozens of these in the valley and now there’s none.

We viewed the building from a walking path down by the Crowsnest River. It’s a nice stroll and there’s some history too.
