Avalon Theatre Coronation Alberta (Closed)

The Avalon Theatre in Coronation Alberta is closed. It’s of another era and you can tell simply by looking at the structure. That’s mid-century architecture. Going to movies isn’t the event it once was and like many small town businesses that once flourished, its run has ended.

Tastes change and there’s competition in other places. Now you can just watch it at home thanks to streaming services – even recent releases – if you so desire. But it seems that Hollywood pictures, in the traditional sense, are not the draw they used to be. Not only have small town theatres closed but those in big cities have suffered too. The magic is no more.

The Avalon Theatre opened in the early 1950s, although interestingly the local history book lists a second opening date of the mid-1960s. Sold at some point perhaps?

Oddly, they do not appear in any phone books searched until the mid-1960s. A newspaper ad from 1961 shows the building looking much as it does today, and there’s no phone listed. Didn’t need them in small towns back then…I guess.

Now the building houses a computer services firm and while not quite the same, at least someone has found a use for it. Empty buildings in small towns is an all too common occurrence.
